Not really much interesting is going on Just thought I’d update on a few things since people have been asking for it.
I bought the USBtinyISP. It’s a cheap AVR microcontroller programmer (sold as a kit). I already have (more expensive) PIC programmer, but the AVR seem better with the availability of avr-gcc, avr-libc and avrdude (interfaces with the hardware programmer). Having to do any thing with PIC using free software always seems like a pain in the ass (like I can’t find mac or linux software for the programmer I have). Anyway, the AVR assembly seems more to my liking (on the rare occasion that I do some). I haven’t made the LED blink yet as I still need parts (a Digikey order was made the other day), but hopefully next week.
While on the topic of hardware, I wanted to built a cheap kit radio so I could try some homebrew QRP. People have recommended the SW+ 40, along with a few others. I was just wondering if there was any other recommendations? Also, any opinions on the Norcal keyer or any set of paddles?

WA2NPP: Amateur Radio at Rutgers is having it’s first meeting of the semester to gather interest in the club and the hobby. I’ll be on March 27 at 9 - 10 pm in the BCC International Lounge. See wa2npp.rutgers.edu for more information and flyers.

Took the General Element 2 exam today, since they got rid of the Morse Code Element 1 yesterday. Passed, which is a good thing since I’ve been studying for it (randomly) since like 2003.
Congratulations to Marla and John for passing their Tech exam.
Update: If anyone would like to study for their General, I have the Fourth and Fifth Edition of the ARRL General Class License Exam Study Guide.

Awesome. So I got a message on the answering machine yesterday. It was a Radiogram asking me to support the National Traffic System by joining a local Traffic Net. I’ve been trying to checking into NJVN (New Jersey VHF Net) Early for the past month or so, but have been busy. Maybe I should try the Late net.

I yanked the old wa2npp webserver today. It didn’t take too long to get a bash prompt on the box, so I could get configuration info.
The computer formally known as thyme will be replacing it (which is a much beefier machine), hopefully by the end of the weekend.
Once again, if you would like to join and help out the club, email me!

So I emailed Brian Boccardi, and he said that we’d need at least eight people in order to get the ham radio club back together (and evict whoever is in our room now (we do need a specific room in the Rutgers Student Center)). If you’d be interesting in joining or helping out, email me.
In the mean time, thyme has be reassigned to the new position as the wa2npp web server. This will replace the current server which is a broke 486. I’d hope to get it replaced by the weekend and have something up.

I want to see if the Rutgers Ham Radio Club (WA2NPP) can be revived. It’s been inactive for a couple years now, and it’s room in the Rutgers Student Center has been taken away, which is pretty sad (luckily the antennas are still up). I want to contact Brian Boccardi in a few days to see if there is anything I can do to help to club get back together. If you’d like to help, or want any updates, feel free to email me.

ARRLWeb: FCC Releases Report and Order in “Morse Code” Proceeding
The FCC has just removed the Element 1 (the 5 wpm Morse code requirement) for a General class license. One less excuse to not upgrade. I guess I’ll be studying up the questions and upgrade in Feburary or March.
Also, they unified the Technician and Technician Plus licenses. Techs have some HF privileges now.
