A good chuckle from our Friends at HP

Siva’s webtop – Call from Printer Company

This got a good chuckle out of me.

Speaking of HP, I installed VMS on my VAX this weekend. Still have no clue how to use it.

SCSI Disk

I’m looking to get my VAXstation running again, and I’m needing a >= 1 GB SCSI Disk (I gave back the disk I used to the Indy). If you have or know a person willing to part with such a disk, please contact me. I’d prefer a DEC RZ disk, but I’m willing to take anything. Or if you are willing to part with a larger disk, I guess I could do the swap with the Indy.

“People don’t expect TFTP to essential”

It’s the start of summer break and I don’t really have anything planned besides working (for Rutgers as a Student Programmer). One interesting thing I’ve been doing is to actually bring the hand full of systems that have been laying in my room back to life. Since the end of finals, I’ve install IRIX on an Indy, VMS on a VAXstation 3100 m38 (yeah, the one I got on eBay a long time ago), and trying to boot a NCD X Terminal. I’ve basically done everything at least twice since I want to get a feel of the installer and to correct mistakes (like not knowing how DEC’s licensing works). I’ll post something later detailing everything I’ve done.

Nothing

It’s been a while and I feel like I should post something (mainly just to get stuff out of my system).

It’s been a stessful month, with exams and personal stuff to complete, and the end isn’t in sight (except for Linear Systems & Signals lab, which ended on Thursday (very excited about that)). I really hate how Professors get behind schedule on work/lectures, then pile it on at the end. They probably do realize that every other instructor is doing that and just want to be dicks about it. It’ll all end in four weeks, which is too far and too much work away.
Pretty much the only other noteworthy event was the ACM Programming Contest Regional thing last Sunday (with free t-shirt and slap braclets), which really wasn’t that noteworthy. I need to program more. (Sidenote: the slap braclets where from an company called AdaCore, which program things like air traffic controls systems in Ada (they work with GNAT). Makes we want to learn Ada and get a horrible government job.)

It’s one o’clock in the morning, and I don’t feel like sleeping, so more randomness. The DEC Storage Expansion unit I got for my VAXstation works for the most part. I got the correct SCSI cable and terminator, and powered it up. The VAX can find both disks in the unit, but only recognizes one of them. I have this feeling that it might be bad, which is probably is the least that could have happend to a 15 year old piece of hardware. Anyway, I’m going to see if I can find a disk to put inside of the VAXstation so I can get more disk space. I should be getting a CD-ROM drive in the mail any day now.

The Terminator

So, after some confusion, I finally got the SCSI cable I needed for my VAX (which is a VAXstation 3100, complete with weird-ass SCSI connector). Now, I need to get a CD-ROM drive, then I’ll be in business.

When I get the drive, I’ll be sure to post a something about the VMS install.

DEC, maybe a NeXT

For some reason, I’ve been looking on eBay to get a NeXT cube and/or a PDP-11 (any model, earlier ones preferred).

I’m almost to the point where I can try to get my VAX running (I got a SCSI cable the other day to connect the main guts to the external storage expansion thing (I couldn’t find a sutable disk to put inside)).
